How we track UK newspaper coverage of climate change

We’ve recently started looking at how often climate change is mentioned in UK newspapers. Here, we lay out the aims and process behind the project.

Newspapers included

Our researcher analyses articles in 13 of the UK’s most prominent daily and weekly newspapers using an online news database. The database only includes articles printed in the paper form of the newspaper, excluding articles that only appear online.

The newspapers included in the analysis are the Daily Mail, Mail on Sunday, Times, Sunday Times, Guardian, Observer, Express, Sunday Express, Sun, Daily Telegraph, Sunday Telegraph, Independent, and Independent on Sunday. The Financial Times is not included within the database, so does not feature in our analysis.

Search terms

We search for the exact term “climate change” in each of the publications. The data is then divided by month – allowing us to track how often climate change is mentioned, and in which publications, over time.
